Gotland Sofia attacked by pirates

Pirate attack on the Gotland Sofia

The chemical tankers Gotland Sofia was early Sunday morning attacked by pirates outside Cotonou in West Africa. The vessel was engaged in a Ship-to-Ship operation when the pirates boarded
The crew immediately alerted the Company Security Officer and thereafter retreated into the citadel. Once forces from Benin Navy arrived, the pirates escaped protected by the darkness

The crew consists of 18 Filipinos, four Swedish and one Ukrainian. All onboard are physically unharmed but chocked by the incident
The vessel suffered only minor damages.

The vessel has now been escorted closer to the port for a thorough search by the military and investigation of the incident

The attack could be averted thanks to the exemplary quick action by the crew and the Benin Authorities

Family members of the crew have been informed of the incident.
